Born from an experimental EP put together by producer and MD Nathan Britton, comprising of several of London’s top nu soul performers the Neo Soul Collective presents originals and covers of some of the best nu:soul to come out of London in recent years. This performance features vocals from Xam Volo, Ego-Ella May, Natalie Oliveri & Kimba Bush accompanied by a musical heavyweights from the Soho.Live Studio Band: Tashomi Balfour (Sax), Nathan Britton (Piano), Sheldon Agwu (Guitar), Karl Rasheed-Abel (Bass), Jamie Murray (Drums).
Xam Volo oversees every element of his music, which he describes as “a messy mind over raw, dark jazz grooves”. Since moving to Liverpool to study in 2012, the Londoner has embraced himself in the local music scene with his unique and enigmatic take on Neo-Soul and Jazz. Influences from Erykah Badu, Miguel, Frank Ocean and Maverick Sabre echo in his music, with a gospel-infused sophistication and often abstract lyrics.
Ego Ella May has a high level of admiration for people who show their vulnerabilities through music, and uses this as a source of inspiration; “It’s so easy to lie to yourself and others, so I really admire people who have the audacity to be truthful”. Her songwriting takes influences from equal measures of reflective moments of solitude and conversations with friends which she demonstrates with effortless power in each unique voicing.
